ABS Radio aims to
serve the needs of the Arabic Speaking Community which is one of the
largest Non-English Speaking Background (NESB) groups in Australia.
The Arabic Speaking
Community comprises Australians from Lebanon, Egypt, Jordan, Syria,
Iraq, The Gulf States, Palestine, Sudan, Algeria, Morocco as well as
other nationals who were born in Arab States and can read the Arabic
language. The 1991 Census established that there were in excess of
142,641 Arabic Speaking Australians in NSW alone. Arabic Speaking
Australians have a strong sense of their cultural background and tend
to support business people in their own reference group.
The Arabic Speaking Community is very different to many other
language groups, as the group is non-homogenous. This is due to the
fact that the language covers many nationalities and a number of
religious groups. Many Arabic Speaking Australians were born in
Australia.
These figures are based on 2001 Census data (see
statistics)
and indications
show that this number has increased substantially since this survey
was conducted. |
